How can I make my vector files more compatible?

Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) in Vector Graphics

There's nothing more frustrating for a vector artist than finding out a file he or she has just perfected won't work in another program. Vector programs are changing on a daily basis so keeping up with compatability issues can be quite a headache. Here are a few tips from istockphoto.com that will make using vector programs a little easier:

*To edit a vector file in another program, enter the encapsulated postscript (EPS) format. Created by Adobe, EPS files can work in a variety of different programs. They can also be placed into page layout programs such as Quark.

*Almost any EPS file saved from Illustrator 8 will open into other vector editing software. If you work on a file that may leave your computer, it's a good idea to downsave your files to Illustrator 8 or lower. This will help someone else who needs to edit the file.

*If you aren't working in Illustrator and can't do this, open the file into any text editor like NotePad on a PC or Text Edit on a Mac. You will see jibberish, but pay attention to the first line. If it reads Adobe EPS 3.0 or lower, you will most often have an editable file, although there are some exceptions to this rule.

How can I make my vector graphics better?

Vector Graphics: Start With a Great Photo

Are you tired of the vector graphics you've been turning out? Do you feel like something is missing? Are your final graphics boring you? It may be that the composition of your vector graphic is simply not good. Every vector graphic starts with a solid composition. You might want to consider starting the creation of your vector graphics by using a really great stock photo as a guide. You may be a great vector artist, but every vector graphic needs a good base, regardless of the content style. You might find a photo with great shape and form and that could be the missing link in your vector graphic. Keep in mind:

*Composition is the single most important element in vector graphics. So, study the subject and you'll be surprised at the results.

*Do not use a photo that is owned by someone else. Even if you change it greatly, you could be violating copyright laws. Use your own photo.

What is vector art?

What is Vector Art?

A vector image is basically a graphic image that is defined by colors, shapes, lines and other visual qualities. (A vector image is not the same as a bitmap graphic image).

You see vector art countless times every single day. Consider the sign you just drove by, the image a company uses as part of its logo or the heading of a newsletter you just received via email. Different types of programs are used to create vector art. Some of these include CorelDRAW, Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Vector art is as limitless as the human imagination and can be very powerful when used in a presentation, on a company website or other marketing material. By creating or purchasing an original piece of vector art, you can express exactly what you want to convey through an image and vector art is a great alternative to traditional photography.

Vector art can be edited using certain software programs. Unlike photos, vector images are often 'resolution independent' and might be easier to incorporate into a presentation or other marketing material.

Become Familar with Vector Language

The field of vector graphics is changing daily. New programs and new ways to manipulate vector art images for individual uses become available. The following are some simple concepts you should become aware of as you enter the vector graphic world:

*Objects compose vector graphics and are defined by mathematical equations and not pixels, like photographs.

*All objects within a vector image have paths. These paths are essential for working with vector images to create interesting effects for the end user.

*Vector images are made up of a variety of nodes. These so-called nodes have different characteristics, such as symmetrical or smooth.

*Most graphic software offers the vector designer the use of both bezier and spline types of curves.

*In creating good vector art, compatability is key. With so many programs out there, you should investigate which files are compatible with a variety of programs. Do this first or you will lose valuable time creating vector art!
